SUPREME COURT SENTENCES

PALMERSTON N., Nov. 21

At the Supreme Court before Mr Justice Smith, Keith Drysdale, aged 19," labourer, and Allan Drysdale, aged 18, motor mechanic, James Leonard Webb, aged 20, labourer, Howard Kenneth Stratton, aged 20, farmer, William Uikihana, aged 27, storeman, were sentenced 'lor breaking, entering, and theft at Levin. Keith Drysdale was described as the ring-leader (and was sentenced to three years’ Borstal detention, Stratton three years’ probation, Allan Drysdale two veals’ probation, Webb three years’ probation, Kikilianu, two years reformative. An order was made for the restitution of the stolen property and the payment of cost of the prosecution.

ELDERLY DOCTOR DEAD. DUNEDIN, November 22. Obituary.— Dr Robert Martin, aged .80, who for nearly fifty years practised his profession in New Zealand, ail hut three of that time being in Dunedin.

At tho Supreme Court, the Crown Prosecutor announced George Campbell would not be required to stand a. third trial oil a charge of arson, two juries having disagreed. The Solici-tor-General had ordered a stay of proceedings. The prisoner was discharged.

RHODES SCHOLAR.

AYELLINGTON, Nov. 22

The Rhodes Scholarship Committee met this morning at Government House. Five candidates presented themselves and the scholars elected for 1919 are E. E. Bailey L.L.B. of Auckland University College, and W. E. Henley, of the University of Otago/ Bailey proposes to pursue his studies in law and Henley the study of medicine.
