Sorensen denied that he ever referred to Captain Carey as negligent, or said, “They are murderers,” as quoted in tlie newspapers. He declared he was misquoted. The newspapermen who interviewed Sorenson offered to testify, and will probably he called to-morrow. Sorenson concluded by stating that the Yestris’ lifeboats and ship were apparently in good condition. A previous, message stated that Frederick Sorenson, a passenger, and himself a master mariner, had declared that the loss of life was due to criminal neglect. “The engine room was flooded, and also the boiler room, and many cabins, and this continued from early on' Sunday morning until Monday, when the captain sent out the first distress signals.”

NEGRO MANIAC RUNS AMOK

NEW YORK, Nov. 21. A message from Omaha, Nebraska, states that the city is in a state of panic to-night, because of a maniac negro, who within the last three days killed two men and fatally injured a woman and another man. B The negro, in every case used a hatchet upon sleeping persons in their homes, which he entered at night. The wounded woman gave the police a description of the attacker. The entire police force, as well as a hundred voluntary constables, are patrolling the streets in the hope of catching the murderer, and preventing further attacks.
