FALSE PRETENCES

John Sutherland, aged forty-nine, of AAMiangarei, New Zealand, a recent arrival in Sydney, formed the acquaintance of Dennis Finn $i the city. He listened attentively to n tall story about a cane farm in Queensland which Finn was supposed to own. Finn induced Sutherland to advance money for implements on the promise that Sutherland would be emoloyod there. Sutherland went to Brisbane where he discovered he had been duped. He was compelled to walk nearly the whole way hack to Sydnev*. owing to hoinc broke. He told the story in the City Police Court and Finn, who was described by the Magistrate as a heartless fellow, was sentenced to six months’ imprisonment.
