It would appear that the “Grey River Argus,” or some of its writers have a measure of their on as regards political honesty or some of its contributors are inclined to judge others by themselves. This thought is prompted by the following jibe in Tuesday’s paper: “There has been a certain amount of talk about continuing the main south road from the coast over the Haast Pass into Otago, hut it has been largely talk for electoral ends. However, if the people who are anxious for this road to he made are as serious about it now as they were a week ago, let them get behind the Alemher for the District and push for the work to be itarted by the Government. They will nd that the chances of success are now brighter than they were, if they only get together and work with a will.” We do not know of any grounds for the gratuitous insult conveyed in the foregoing. The Alemher for AVcstland elect when in office previously had no occasion, we should sav, to consider the community was not behind oin in the efforts to advance the district. Speaking here at pre-election Air O’Brien produced a sheaf of letters from the Westland County Council which indicated that the local body was not' remiss in making use of his services, and wo feel sure the local body will be as impersonal again when it is a matter of furthering local interests. \s regards the great south road work, let us repeat that the greatest credit is due Air Seddon for the uphill fight he had to got that national work recognised. Fortunately he had the Prime Minister (Air Coates) on his side, and the work has been specially earmarked in the latest Public. Works Statement. The district, and particularly Southern Westland, is therefore specially indebted to both Air Coates and Air Seddon, though in respect to the latter, the voting at some of the far south booths did not show the marked appreciation which might have been expected. But, at least, they are not like our contemporary, which cannot resist the temptation of endeavouring to make, capital out of the matter. The day following the election we indicated our attitude towards Mr O’Brien, and there was not any occasion to question our political honesty not only in relation to the statement made, hyt also in regard to our past actions ini always doing our liest to promote the best interests of the district irrespective of any party feeling. We believe our record stands to our credit in that respect, and for that reason we strangle resent the implication and insult thrown out in the paragraph from the “Grey River Argus” quoted above.
