SUICIDE CHARGE WITHDRAWN,

DANNEVIRKE, Nov. 20.

When ;i charge of suicide against T. H. L. Hitching, was called before Magistrate Miller, it was stated by the police that accused had been committed to a mental hospital and Sergeant Martin asked that tHe charge be withdrawn.

Hitchings was the man, who a few days ago, at his home at Dannevirke, early in the morning, allegedly presented a loaded gun at Police Sergeant Martin, when he went to the house in response to an urgent summons. Owing to accused’s peculiar conduct the request for the withdrawal of tho charge was granted.

MOTORING MISHAP

CHRISTCHURCH, Nov. 19

A. Dudley Dobson, formerly city engineer of Christchurch, and Airs Dobson met with an accident yesterday while motoring between Kerivee and Darficld. The back tyre of their car blew out causing it to turn over, the occupants being pinned down till assistance was rendered by neighbouring farmers. Mrs Dobscon was badly bruised and is suffering from shock. Air Dobson was cut about the face and is much shaken. He recently celebrated his eighty seventh birthday.

SUPREME COURT.

PALMERSTON N., Nov. 20,

The quarterly session of tho Supremo Court, tho last for 1928, opened this morning before .Justice Smith who informed the Grand Jury that there were no cases for their consideration. The only case for trial was one in which accused had already been tried and the Court of Appeal had ordered a retrial. A true bill having been found already, there was no need for tho Grand Jury to reconsider the case. Robert MeConkey, an elderly man. who had pleaded not guilty was on trial on a charge of indecently assaulting a female at Orangi. The Court was cleared and an order was made forbidding publication of the evidence. FOR ANTARCTICA. DUNEDIN, Nov. 20. It is doubtful if the Eleanor Bolling will get away till to-morrow morning. After loading planes at Wellington she will sail for the Coast to pick up the sailer, City of New York. Captain Brown, of the Eleanor Bolling and Captain Alelville of the City of New York hold special appointments

as postal clerks for the T'.S.A. in the Antarctic. A special stamp, 4in. by 2in. will accompany the New Zealand stamp. It shows a ship caught in the ice floes with planes flying over her. Capt. AlcKinlay, aerial surveyor, will visit Christchurch to arrange with the Wigram Aerodrome for a flight over the plains to test his survey cameras.
