POLE BLOWN DOWN. TRAAI JUST MISSED. (By Telegraph—Press Association). NAPIER, November 10. A telegraph pole in Hastings street, nist beyond the centre of the town, -napped off flush with the ground and crashed across the street at noon today. narrowly missing a well loaded passing trnmear. All t.he wires broke as the pole fell, and in consequence electric light and power and telephone connexions in a limited area wore effected until repairs were carried out. The pole had rotted at the pavement and was unable to bear the weight of the wires and withstand the wind blowing at the time.
A NASTY ROW
BETWEEN FIREMEN AND POLICE
CHRISTCHURCH. November 17
A nasty row took place at a hotel at Lyttelton this morning between a number of firemen and police. The encounter was a furious one. The police wore cornered, and had to use handcuffs on the heads of their opponents, to keep them at hay, until ioinforcoments arrived.
One man was arrested, but the others escaped. They are well known, however,- as seamen regularly visiting the -port.
LORRY DESTROYED
CHRISTCHURCH, Nov. 17
A motor lorry, owned by A. E. Rad-f-1 i(To, carrier, of Governor’s Bay, was destroyed by fire on the Dyer’s Pass Road on Friday night. • Thb lorry was loaded with 100 empty petrol cases. Engine trouble developed on the hill, and the driver struck a match to investigate. Flames hurst out, and as no help was available, the lorry, valued at £350 was totally destroyed.

At the inquest- concerning the death rif Mrs Florence Gash, sixty, of Auckland. who was run down by an engine while walking at night in the Ernnkton Junction yards, the verdict was accidental death. ’! he driver vns exonerated from blame.
