The “Observer” states that the New Zealand elections have confounded the tipsters. Some sort of coalition is inevitable, but Coates and Ward can scarcely combine. The latter may hold office with Labour support. United Liberals deserve the name because they have won bv a combination of Asquithian leadership and a Lloyd Georgian programme.

The allocation of postal votes in Christchurch South reduces Howard’s lead from 981 to 2(59 pver McCully. The counting of 590 declaration and absentee votes will be completed tonight.
