“ Do you not think the penalty is a little bit out of reason?” asked 31 r Dickson of the Magistrate, Mr Hunt, in the Police Court, when I‘ong 1 ing, a Chinese laundryman, aged 34, was fined £2O on a charge of overstaying a temporary permit to remain in New Zealand. The Magistrate: No, I do not think it unreasonable.

Counsel: His only reason for not leaving was because he had no money. The Magistrate: They always pay their fines. Counsel: Their countrymen pay tor them. However, it is one way of getting revenue for the Government, but 1 should not think the Government would want it now it is likely to have a £70,000,000 loan. The Magistrate: I cannot speak on that.

GAOLED' FOR THEFT.

WELLINGTON, November 10. Five unemployed seamen appeared ‘bclforo Mr Page. S.M., charged with drunkenness and the theft of two bottles of liquor, and two measures, valued at £5, from the Foresters Arms Hotel. . The story of the licensee was that he had refused to serve the men. < left the bar, and on returning, found one df them behind the counter, and took a bottle from him. The men left the hotel, and the licensee communicated with the police. The five men were arrested m othei hotels. The men were: William Henry Smith 29: James Cope, 31; John MeAuley, 27; Stephen Ottoole, 29; Michael James Coyne, 51. The Magistrate said it was clear that Cope and MeAuley were guilty o' L l,cft. Each would lie sentenced to of days. There was a doubt about the others, who were discharged.
