A SERIOUS FIRE

NEWCASTLE, Nov. 8

A terrace of five wooden two storied shops in the centre of the city, was burned to the ground in the early morning. The damage amounts to £12,000.

After the Cup. Day truce, the stevedores collected in considerable numbers on the waterfront in the morning, but no “pick up” was made. The police patrolled file piers and the approaches. The idle men shortly afterwards returned to their city rendezvous.

BUSH FIRES.

SYDNEY, November 7

The temperature here to-day for several hours was in the nineties. The maximum was 9(1 at 2 o’clock. A boisterous hot wind from the north-west added to the discomforts and the city was shrouded in a smoke pall ifrom Imsh and scrub fires in the environs.

The Fire Brigades had busy times, and many amateur fire fighters were engaged in beating back the flames that raced through dry scrub, driven by a gale that occasionally topped fil'tv miles-an hour.

Bush fires are reported in many of the country districts. A curious accident occurred at the Waterfall Sanatorium where a passenor bus was taking petrol from a bowser when a flying spark ignited the spirit. The Inis was destroyed, and the driver was considerably burnt.
