LATE LOCALS.
The younger people had a night out last night celebrating Guy Fawkes. Quito a large number were dressed up in their worst for the special occasion and there was much amusement caused by their carrying on in the various portions of the town, accompanied by small displays of fireworks and cracker.
The sale of furniture and furnishings in the Soldiers’ Hall l>y Mr S. Burnett White, is being concluded on Saturday next, so intending purchasers should take advantage of the opportunity of the last few days. There is a great selection of high class furniture and furnishings which are being offered at very low prices to effect a clearance.
At the Magistrate’s Court, Greymouth, on Monday before Air W. Aleldrum, S.M., Dennis Costello was charged with the theift, on divers dates between May 5, 1927, and August 20, 1928, of £7Ol 6s 6d, the property of the Grey County Council while lie was employed as an assistant clerk by that body. Accused pleaded not guilty, reserved his defence, and was committed for trial at the next sitting of the Supreme Court at Greymouth. He was readmitted to bail in self £2OO and two sureties of £IOO each, which were forthcoming.
Mr T. E. Y. Seddon has received the following reply from the Prime Minister with reference to the Kuniata water race and its relation to water for lire and domestic uses by the Kumara Borough Council“ Replying to your telegram re the Kumara water race, clause 2 of the agreement for the purchase of the water races, between the Minister of Mines and the Westland Power Board, provides that iit, all times whilst, water is available from water races license number 1860, the Board will supply the Kumara Borough with such water as it reasonably requires for domestic and fin* prevention purposes. Charges to bo fixed by agreement, failing which by arbitration.”
