When asked to plead. Toral said that his idea was to sacrifice his own life and General Ohregon’s. which would bring, to a climax the religious fpiestion in .Mexico, and no other bloodshed would occur. “I acted lor the good of till Catholics.” he declared. "I. thought of leaving my wife and fatherless children, but. on the other hand. I thought also of the innumerable widows and orphans that have been left throughout the country and due to the conditions which mv act might change. Those who live by the sword die by the sword!” He insisted fervently that he was referring to Ohrogon. Ho also said that there has existed a. great persecution of the Catholic Church in Mexico. If flic general indifference continued. Hie cause ol religion would lie lost in Mexico, adding: “And to bring things to a head. I decided to shoot Ogregon.”
