POSTAL AND ABSENT VOTING

Some confusion exists in the minds of the public regarding the difference between postal voting and absent vot-

The provision for postal voting is new, and is being put into operation for the first time at the General Elections this year. Postal voting has been introduced so that the voter who by reason of illness, infirmity, or distance from polling place, may record his or her vote. It is also for use in the case of a voter who is leaving on a trip, say to Australia, before polling day. and will not bo in the Dominion oil polling day. The voter, under postal voting, may exercise his vote before polling day. The necessary postal vote certificates and postal ballot papers (now that the writs have been issued) are obtainable from returning officers. In the case of an absent voter, be can only record bis vote on polling day. Absent voting is provided for those electors who will* be absent from their own electorate on polling day, and enables them to record their vote for any of the candidates in their own electorate at any polling Booth in the Dominion. Thus, an elector of any of the West Coast electorates who is anywhere else on polling day, can record his vote at any polling booth in that place. Absent voting has been simplified and the elector instead of going to the Registrar of Electors and signing the necessary declaration can sign it in the polling booth on polling day. His signature is verified afterwards by the Registrar of Electors for his electorate.
