FLOODS NEAR CARTERTON

CARTERTON, Nov. 1
Serious floods are raging all over the district owing to excessive rains. The Kokotau bridge is closed to all traffic, the recently driven piles having given way and the approaches Washed out. Many settlers are surrounded and unable to reach town but are in no danger. Communication at Gladstone, Kokotau, Ponatalii. Abiarubi. is completely cut off. Reports from Lower A'alloy state the waters overtopped tho stopbanks. The whole stopbank and the whole countryside is inundated to the greatos depth for twenty years. The Tuhitarata Dairy Factory is flooded and is unable to work. No serious damage except the Kokotau bridge, is yet reported. Rain is still falling but not heavily. The water has dropped half an inch since eight this morning.
A .MOTOR VICTIM
DOWNED WITHOUT WARNING
PALMERSTON N.. November 1
A motor cyclist proceeding along the Foxton line, at f.n early hour this morning, discovered the body ol a youth lying across the road, hut it was too late to avoid running over him. Ihe result was that the motor cyclist was thrown from his machine, hut was unhurt. Going back, be found a youth, named .lames Selwyn Chappell, aged 20 years, seriously injured, be having evidently been knocked down by a passing ear or a cycle just previously. .Medical aid .vas summoned. l»nt Chappell died <d a lrnctu"od si<all. The deceased evidently had bad no warning, as bis bauds were still in bis pockets. It is understood that bis mother resides at A\haugarei.
POST MORTEM. ORDERED
AUCKLAND, November 1
A post-mortem examination of the body of .Miss Rita Clark, aged about 30. who died to-day in the nursing home of Nurse Georgina Ellen (olnott. ; ,t Grey Lynn, lias been ordered by the Coroner.
Miss Clark was found in a state of collapse, but she died shortly before lie arrived.

The mine operated by the M.oanataiari Gold Mining Coy at Thames was 'dosed yesterday, pending •a. special meeting of flic shareholders to discuss the financial position. “ Unless we get more finance, we cannot carry on,” said Mr Deter Matson, Chairman of Directors. He added that the Government, which had given some assistance in the past, was unwilling to give any farther aid. , The shareholders will meet on November 12th to consider whether an endeavour should be made to raise more capital, or whether the company should go into voluntary liquidation.

YOUNG MAN SHOT

A young man named Clevio was accidentally shot at Earnseleugli last night-. He is in the Dunstan hospital in a serious condition.
CONSPIRACY' CHARGE
AGAINST POLICEMEN
AUCKLAND, Nov. 1
Thu trial of two former police constables, Thomas -Francis Carroll, ageo 29, and -Sydney Francis Waters, aged 33, and a- taxi-driver. James Tait. aged 33, on charges of arson and eon spiraey to defraud, commenced at tie Supreme Court this alternoon. I lie charges anise out of a sensational explosion anil fire in Carroll’s shop at 02. Napier Street, Ponsonb.v, early on the morning of August 291 b. Each of the three was charged with wilfully setting tire to the premises, and with conspiring to defraud the British Traders’ Insurance Coy., Ltd., of £394. Carroll was further indicted with having made a declaration to a forgery in declaring his loss by lire before a Justice of the Peace. Evidence (was given by James Irwin. trustee in the estate owning the shop, and by an insuarnce adjuster. The Court then adjourned till tomorrow.
CHILD KILLED BY AIOTOR.
WELLINGTON, Nov. 1. At till! inquest Oil the child. Alargaret A. J. Ralph, aged 4-V years, who was killed by a motor car in Willis Street, evidence was given that she was skipping across the road and vas watching another car. A passenger said that sho appeared to come out from behind the car suddenly, The verdict was one of accidental death.

Miss Motley 'was a passenger in the defendants' car when it overturned at a corner near I’araparammi anil she was seriously injured, her pelvis being crushed, and also sustaining other injuries. Appellant claimed that the car at the time was travelling at an excessive and dangerous rate of speech while the defendants denied there was any negligence..
