CRICKET

ENGLAND v. SOUTH AUSTRALIA.

MATCH DRAWN

SOUTH AUSTRALIA 524

ENGLAND VERY CAUTIOUS

(Austrail inn Press Association.) (United Service.)

ADELAIDE, Oct. 30

In the cricket match, South Australia v. England, the last wicket in the South Australian stand carried the score from 496 to 524 amid excitement, or to only four of England’s total.

Scott, the last man in, showed form, hitting Freeman and White vigorous-

Tho innings last 445 minutes. The weather was fine, and the wicket was fast, hut the attendance was smaller than on the previous days. Bright cricket was played by- Hobbs and Sutcliffe -in opening England’s second knock. They scored faster than in their first innings’ partnership, and reached one hundred and thirty-one in seventy-six minutes, Ilobhs scoring sixty-four in the same time, including five 4’s.

It was an improvement on the day’s play in the first innings. The cricket was steady and interesting, but was without thrills.

Sutcliffe, who was in ninety minutes, hit eleven _ 4’s. Both he and Hobbs were dismissed in the same fashion. They were caught in the slips when playing back to Williams. Tyldesley and Leyland were not impressive in a cautious partnership. The former made many risky shots. The cricket after tea was steady, but unattractive. Mead and Leyland. both left handers, played a careful game, taking no risks and waiting for loose balls. Grimmett bowled only six overs when lie was taken off, being saved for the more important matches ahead. Without him, South Australia’s attack presented no difficulties to the batsmen, who made their-partner-ship worth 100 in seventy-six minutes. Leyland was the more aggressive, Mead being content to play safe. Levland’s century was the fifth of the match and it was the least impressive one, lacking the charm or vigour of the others, and being made against weak bowling. Af,ter a partnership which added 139 to the score, Leyland was dismissed. In 146 minutes he hit thirteen fours. Mead cautiously plodded to 58, when stumps were drawn. He was- in 106 minutes.
