U.S. PRESIDENCY

ELECTION PROSPECTS

(United Press Association.—By Electric Telegraph.—Copyright. V

NEW YORK, October 27. Indications that- the Republican have become frightened of a distinct popular . drift toward Smith are seen to-day in two important political announcements, , one from Hoover that should the winter session of next Congress not pass .farm, relief legislation, he would, if elected, call a. special session of congress. to deal with “our most urgent economic problem,” and the other from sources close to Mr Coolidge that the President will probably issue a statement next week appealing nationally on behalf of Mi* Hoover. Hitherto Mr -Coolidge lias refrained from campaign utterances.

Smith in a recently completed Middle West and New England speaking tour was accorded a triumphant popular reception. Observers of both parties are agreeing that even Wilson and Roosevelt were never so acclaimed. The announcement furthermore that Senator Norris, who with La Follette, led the progressive movement in 1924, would definitely support Smith, thus possibly securing the vote of the agricultural north-west for tlie Governor, has accentuated Smith’s prospects of the presidential campaign. * La Follette junior stated he will support neither Smith nor Hoover, but ■finds Smith’s Water power and agricultural pplicy commendable.
