UNEMPLOYED
DEPUTATION TO PREMIER
(By Telegraph—Press Association)
AUCKLAND, Oct. 29
Couching a request in most respectful and courteous terms, a deputation of six representing the unemployed in Auckland waited on the Premier this morning asking that married men on relief works be paid 14s per day between now and Christmas. It would help the women to get a few little things for the festive season.
They were told by Mr Coates that although he was unable to accede to the request, he would issue instructions immediately that all men on relief works “be given a lair go,” so that they might have a chance to earn more than 9s (single) and 12s (married) per day. Also, lie agreed that men who went into the country, to take in contract work should lie paid 9s and 12s per day for a fortnight or three weeks, as it was impossible for them to make that money on contracts before they “got their muscle up.” He regretted the men should have to go to relief works at all, and it was his desire to make things as hopeful as possible for them by allowing the opportunity to 'make more than the minimum rates of pay.
