NEW YORK, October 25
Lord Melchett (formerly Sir Alfred Mond) at a conference of major industries here, asserted that England bad no desire to re-open the debt question with the United States, He asked if America wished to take no part in the settlement of the German reparations problems. “If she does not,” lie asked, “at least let her not get in the way,” he said. “ Our difficulties in Europe are great enough, but we feel we are competent to deal with the European problems. Wherever any attempt is made in Europe to come together, we are always greeted with suspicion and hostility on the part of the people on this side of the ocean, who attributes to us all kinds of motives which never enter our heads.”

CHURCH AFFAIRS. (Received this day at 12.25. p.m.) WASHINGTON. October 25. “ If Catholic and Protestant cannot find a way to live together and worship together in the one world they both adore then our faith is in vain and we live in our sin,” said a pastoral letter of bishops of the Protestant Episcopal Clmreti issued to-day. stressing the need for finding common grounds for worship for all here in America and throughout the entire Anglican com-
munion. There is sense of strain, declared Ri, Rev. Edward Parsons, Bishop of California, heading the letter One group seeks a fuller measure of what it counts' Catholic, and another group is sick at heart lest one of these great values gained in the Reformation are lost. The most momentuous task facing the world to-day is war against war. It is not the business of tin Cnristian Church to control a government, but the business of the church is to speak in no uncertain way, and putting moral force behind the efforts io' peace and a law-governed world. Christ summoned us to world unity as well as church unity.”
