ASHBDRTOS’S JUBILEE. (By Telegraph—Per Press Association.) ASHBURTON, Oct. 20. The jubilee of the constitution of the Borough of Ashburton is being celebrated. Yesterday children of the town and suburban schools held a sports meeting. To-day the Council entertained pioneers at a luncheon attended by 130. To-morrow the Councillors attend a service at St. Stephen’s. On Monday the usual gala sports meeting Will be held, preceded by a procession and followed by the coronation of the carnival Queen in the Domain. On Tuesday the present Councillors entertain past Councillors at a smoke concert.
BIG LAND DEAL
A WAIKATO FARM
AUCKLAND, October 19
' The largest land deal transacted in Waikato for a long time was recently completed by a land agent of Hamilton, who sold a farm of 1053 acres at Kiwitahi, formerly owned by Mrs J. Bell, to Mr L. Larner, of Auckland for £25,000 cash.

Admitting a charge of keeping a. common gaming house, Sydney Montague Wvnward, and William Wawiti, two cousins, were fined £2O and £lO respectively in the Police Court.
Chief Detective Hammond said the two accused had been carrying on in the bookmaking business for the past three months at an office in Mining Chambers. They had not been before the court previously, and were taking a risk-in setting up.
Counsel said William Wynyard was a clerk, and had been doing casual work. His cousin had given him a position, doing the same work. His innocence was shown by the fact that lie was in the office when the police called.
The Chief Detective: He joined his cousin in" the business. Counsel said the two had done very little, and had started only in a small way. The Magistrate, Mr Hunt: “ Is that so? Well, I will start only in a-small way with the fine. I could inflict a penalty of £IOO, but I will make it £2O for the head of the business, and £lO fov the other.” AN ARREST. - 1 AUCKLAND, October 21. Detectives arrested Cecil 1 ranc-is Hunt, charged with breaking and entering Meltzer Bins, pawnsliip in the city on June 25th. and stealing jewellery, etc. worth- £l2O. He was remanded till Wednesday. DEATHS FROM ACCIDENT. AUCKLAND, October 22. ‘ The death occurred at the hospital last night of William Murray, aged. 19. injured when a motor cycle collided with a motor car on Wednesday; also of Hubert Thomas, aged 18, struck by a motor truck, while riding a cycle at Avondale on October 10th. WELLINGTON, October 22. Doctor Marsden (Secretary of the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research) returned to-day from Ids American and English, .tour. Hon. W. Nosworthy . arrived back from ( anada to-dav. FOUND DEAD. AUCKLAND, October 22. Frank Carter, aged 46, was found dead in his house near Waimauku on Saturday. An inquiry by‘i’adio located his relatives at Wellington. At the inquest a verdict that death was due to poisoning was returned.
