G ERMAN F ASCI ST’S. BERLIN, October 21. Tfie election of Germany’s “ newspaper king,’’ Herr Hugenberg, as president of the National Peoples Party in succession to Count Westarp, denotes the triumph of the Extremists Party. Hugenberg owns scores of newspapers throughout Germany. He is a bitter opponent of the Republic policy, the understanding with France. Locarno agreement, and Treaty of Versailles. He also is the man behind the Nationalists, Steel Helmet organisation and leader of the German Fascists. His election is certain to increase the tension in internal politics. Ex-Chancellor Marx is resigning the chairmanship of the Centre Party in Decern her for reasons of health.
A NATIONAL CRISIS. (Times Service). LONDON, October 22. The “Times” Berlin correspondent reports the solution of the Nationalist crisis may he followed by worse. One triumph of extreme reactionaries is bound importantly to affect German political ife. Summaries of Westarps and Hugenberg’s programme speeches were allowed to appear only in Hngenberg’s papers. Hugenberg urged Nationalists to attempt to the regeneration of Germany with the restoration of parliamentary tactics. He added that the reparations discussion merely indicated an attempt to rob Germany of an advantage of the Dawes plan. Westarp contended M. Poincare did not contemplate a settlement of reparations, hut a covering of France’s next obligation to the United States.
