SALVATION ARMY
The Salvation Army, which commenced operations, in the*Fast End t.i London in July, 1F65, with 1 member, has in the intervening years grown to he a world-wide organisation of nearly 3,000,000 members, working in 82 countries and colonies and preaching in 57 languages. The : social work of the Army is carried on in 1,700 institutions comprising rescue homes ior men and women, children’s homes, maternity hospitals, leper settlements, ine nates homes, besides food depots opened mainly during.winter month only.
In New Zealand 475 children and 1,828 adults were helped aiul cared for m the army’s 27 homes,' .while in th ■ homes and shelters for workmen 103,682 meals and 71,976 beds weio supplied, this during the year of 192 . The officers' and members of H'o army were instrumental m helping young people, who had gone, astray, preventing suicides, and finding; ,2 missing people. To help this work the members of the Hokitika Municipal Band and several of our best singers have agreed to give a programme in the Princess Theatre, on Thursday next, 25th October.
