Adopting vigorous tactics in contrast to the opening play, England added a century in 75 minutes, full of incidents ‘for several thousand spectators. England were dismissed by luncheon for 406, compiled in 364 minutes, mostly since tea yesterday. Hendren just missed his century after a sparklipg display, attended by some lucky escapes, in 122 minutes. Immediately the popular Chapman, the. left-handed captain, opened vigorously, making 26 in 30 minutes. He was dismissed, taking a chance in attempting a big hit and Was ovationed. Ames was a careful, sound batsman and took 71 minutes making 36.
The bowling during the afternoon was interesting, six visitors taking turn. Leyland and Hammond made the chief impression. Leyland is a clever slow googly bowler, puzzling the batsmen. Hammond had plenty of sting with a. good twisC* • White . got wickets, buV seasoned 'batsTsnen would, have no difficulty in pasting him. Geary concentrated on strong long hops with plenty of pace. Jardine in a short turn secured a" wicket and showed a pretty twist and good length but not much spin. The bowling strength is apparently better and more . varsatile than the last team, though nothing' exceptional yet has tfeenj shown.. The Westralian youths stood up well,
though not taking chances. The score about equalled England’s at the same stage. A feature of the play Was the bowling of Evans, securing Leyland, Hammond, and Chapman.
