GERMAN ARMY
PRESIDENT HINDENBURG
(United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph—-Copyright).
LONDON, Oct. 18
The Berlin correspondent of “The Times” reports that President Von Hindenburg was unable to attend the oj>ening of the. new cavalry school at Hanover. He. sent a message emphasising the importance of Cavalry in the present German Army, and urging the officers to set an example to their men of sure and resolute leadership. He said: “Regard your men as a precious trust, confided in you by the Fatherland. Be proud of your profession. Above all, keep the shield of your honour clean. Its purest moral is your love for and your loyalty to our sorelytried Fatherland.”
German military opinion usually maintains that the quota of cavalry in the present German Army as prescribed at Versailles is disproportionately large. Great importance is, therefore, attached to making the best use of it. Recent manoeuvres have been conducted in Upper Silesia, which mainly were devoted to testing new methods and using cavalry for defensive warfare.
