LONDON, Oct. 18
A deluge of medical advice as to what to do and what not to do in order to remain alive has received a, severe rebuff from the Treasurer of the British Medical Association. This was, in effect, that one could eat. drink, and wear what one liked within reason, so long as we found wo could go on liking it. A Harley Street Specialist, in amplifying this, said that he would not dream of following the broadcast, advice of scores of medical men.- The medical profession was not lead by thorn, but it laughed at them.
MRS MACDONALD’S ORDEAL

Mrs MacDonald broke down tlie first time when a wireless bulletin last night mentioned that there was no news of her husband. She was persuaded to retire to bed, but not abandoning hope, she lay sleepless.

SWALLOWED BY PARROT,
LONDON, October 18
A parrot, perched in a stall df the Home Life Exhibition, at Alexander Palace, snatched and swallowed a £l2O diamond brooch from the frock of a visitor, Miss Rita. Ginnings. A doctor was sent for, aind a large dose of castor and olive oils was administered to the bird, but this was unavailing. The bird will remain under observation for. two days. In the event, however, of obstinacy, “ Polly ” will swallow nothing more world.
EMPIRE FRUIT
LONDON, Oct. 19
Prince; Arthur of Connaught, opening the Imperial Fruit Show at Manchester, emphasised that every fruit could be grown in the Empire, and urged greater consumption of Empire fruit. He approved of a proposal to establish a show on a permanent basis.
ALLIES CONFER. PARIS, Oct. 19
Mr Churchill conferred for seventy minutes with M. Poincare and Parker Gilbert. - A communique says that they discussed the constitution of a committee of experts foreshadowed at Geneva. The Governments concerned will continue to exchange views. Gilbert has recently been considering a scheme fo-r a reduction of reparations, which Germany will voluntarily agree to pay. He visited London and conferred with Mr Baldwin and Mi* Churchill and later visits Rome and Berlin.

,Mr Ramsay MacDonald Labour Party Leader, has returned from the Continent. He told the Daily Herald (.Labour paper) that it was rather humiliating to him to he journeying in Europe at present and meeting men who were either the centre of action or were controlling public opinion. Our stock, he said, was indeed low. All the influence that lie' bad was interpreted as having a malign influence. He found that we were slipping out of European influence. That situation was a most dangerous one. We must either he*in Europe or must have influence on it, or else must live on our own lines, free from any European entanglements whatsoever.
