Tho Executive of the League met at 7.35 o’clock. Present: Mr T. W. DufF * , (voted to the chair), Messrs W. Wilson, W. E. Richards, T. W. Bruce, D. J. Evans, W. D. Mackay and J. W. Morris. Apology was made for the absence of Dr Teithelmann (President). The minutes of the previous meeting were confirmed. The outward corres- / pondence was read and approved. INWARD CORRESPONDENCE. From Postal Department notifying / that a mail contract had been let for a twice-weekly service to Welioka in summer, and once weekly in winter.— Received with thanks.
From G. E. Wilson, Chesterfield, protesting against a suggestion that the Chesterfield stop on the GreyHokitika line should be cut out on express night.—Received and reply to be sent that Chesterfield w r as not sug-i gested to the Department. From N.Z. Railways, replying it was regretted the suggested alterations in the Grey-Hokitika service on express nights to ensure an earlier and quicker arrivel at Hokitika could not be complied with owing to the various difficulties in the way, but stating the request would be kept in mind for attention when opportunity offered. Received;' It was resolved to express regret that the district was not receiving the same special consideration which according to the letter was meted out for other centres; also to ask for any copies of objections received to the acceleration proposal.- :t’ , From Messrs Kingsford Smith and Ulm, replying to invitation to visit Hokitika, regretting time did not permit.—Received. v
From W. Goss, Christchurch, stating the Railway Committee of the Canterbury Chamber of Commerce was going into the matter of speeding up the express to Hokitika.—Received. The view was expressed that every effort should be made to do so during the busy seasonal traffic. From P. R. Cliraie, acknowledging letter of sympathy in connection with recent bereavement. —Received. From Canterbury Progress League, replying in regard to action taken to further” district requests dealing with mail services and railway time table ; also forwarding copy of minutes , dt meeting. ' From Southland Progress League forwarding copy of minutes of monthly meeting.—Received. From Andrews, Raty, publishers, Christchurch, notifying eariy 'pubhcatfon of the “New Zealand Motor Owner,” a monthly magazine dealing specially with motoring and touring, and suggesting articles describing tours in Westland be supplied "-Keceived and referred to Dr and the local Automobile branch. «. . / general.. V. Mr W. D. Mackay expressed appro, val of the request made to have a warning signal placed at the, dangerous railway crossing in Park ’ and moved the League support, the , , representations made. Mr W. Wilson seconded. Carried. , • Mr Bruce pointed out pedestrn . had to use the narrow road as a crossing at the point referred to, and .on hi motion it was decided to askt Jfc ■ Borough Council to provide a footway for pedestrians in order to avoid vehicle traffic at the crossing.
