At the wool sales to-day 12,085 bales were sold and competition was vigorous with increased support from Yorkshire. The hardening tendency continued. Greasy merino fleece sold to 25£ pence.
TRADE RETURNS.
SYDNEY Oct. 17
Factories of New South Wales last year numbered 11,413 employing 148,958 persons. Decreases were 416 and 2664 respectively compared with' the previous years. Clothing and textile works were the, largest employers, followed by metal trades. Only seven per cent, of the employees are juveniles.
THEFT OF EXPLOSIVE
SYDNEY, Oct, 17
Ernest Rvan has been convicted and fined for stealing gelignite from a City Council store. The police stated Ryan had been approached by two men to Obtain the explosive, so that they could “put the wind up the volunteers.”
TASMANIAN FINANCE
HOBART, Oct. 17
The Budget estimates the revenue for the current year at £2,813,000. A reduction of the Commonwealth grant from £378,000 to £220,000 hampers the Government which anticipates a deficit of £24,000.
