WESTLAND COMPETITIONS SOCIETY

ANNUAL MEETING. The annual meeting of the above Society was held at the County Chambers last evening at 7.40 o’clock. Present—Mr D. J. Evans (President) in the chair), Itevds. G. Knowles-Smitli and Nelson Wright (Vice-Presidents), Mrs It. Fane, Messrs T. W. Duff, H. M. Coulson, G. H. Stapleton, W. ERichards, H. Sweney, J. Conning, R. Lynn, A. G. Pilkington, and J. W: Morris (hoii. sec.). The minutes of the last annual meeting were confirmed. The Hon. Secretary read the annual report referring briefly to the successful Competitions held during the year, and the feature the playettes were of the programme. The balance sheet showed a total credit of £l3B 2s 7d.—Received.

In moving the adoption of the report and balance sheet, the Chairman regretted that, there was not a large* attendance of the publie. However, they could take it that ,the Society’s operations were approved. Appreciation was made of the valuable work done by the Secretary and Treasurer, who were complimented on the pleas--: ing balance disclosed. The pleasant association with the judges was also referred to.

Revd. G. Knowles-Smith seconded the motion, and regarding the apparent apathy of the public at the * ' annual meeting, they had to be grateful for the increased interest shown at the Competitions and the resulting financial benefit. He joined with the President in appreciating the work of Messrs Morris and Conning in executive matters.

’Mr H. M. Coulson expressed gratification with the work of the Society which was responsible for bringing out so much dormant talent. Ho spoke of the angle from which the people of the United States looked at education, and said however* lowly might be the occupations the Americans sought to give the rising generation as good an education as possible. The Competitions were an education and «l’*' the intellect and en- ’ hanced the, knowledge of those taking part in the events. * The motion for the adoption of the report and 'balance sheet was agreed to. , ; ELECTION OF OFFICERS.'

Regarding judges, appreciation was expressed of the work done by the former judges, but in accordance with their wishes, enquiry be made for > judges off the Coast, to take the music, elocutionary and dancing sections at next Competitions.

Mr Moss wrote offering a gold medal • for a vocal competition annually among ladies, the piece to be set bv the judge.—Received with thanks. Miss Rita Morgan was last year’s winner.

A discussion ensued regarding preferential booking at the Demonstration concerts, and the privileges for subscribing members of £l, of whom about twenty notified willingness to contribute. The conditions were agreed on the .lines announced previously.

Other general matters wore discussed and the meeting closed at 8.40 with a vote of thanks to the chair.
