The Chairman of the Hospital Board inserts a notice of thanks in this issue. On Saturday morning, Mr W. Houston, dairyman, of South Hokitika, had the misfortune to break his right wrist when engaged in cranking up his motor-ear. The lvokatahi Tennis Club ball takes place in the Public Hall, lvokatahi, tomorrow (Wednesday) evening. Mush will he supplied by Ross’Orchestra and special supper arrangements are being made by the ladies’ committee. Mrs T. Robinson, stationer, is now booking orders for the Christmas Numbers of Auckland Weekly, Otago Witness, Brett’s Annual, Weekly Press, Free Lance and Sporting and Dra-matic.—-Advt.
A meeting of supporters of Mr J. O’Brien, candidate for Westland seat in. the interests of the Labour Party will be held in the County Chambers, Hokitika to-morrow (Wednesday) evening at 8 o’clock. The time is now very short for enrolling for the general elections, and those eligible should see that their claims are sent in within the next day or two. There will be only one Supplementary Roll printed. That for Westland will contain the addition of a considerable number of names. All interested—and it is hoped it will be a goodly throng—are reminded of the annual meeting of the Westland Competitions Society to be held at the County Chambers to-night at 7.30 o’clock. The business includes the reception of the report and balance sheet, and the election of officers and committee.

Seddon opens his political campaign in the northern part of the .electorate to-morrow when he visits four centres in the Kokiri district. There are only twenty-four days in which to cover the whole electorate, so that there is a considerable task ahead. Now that motor cars offer facilities for quicker travelling it will he possible to cover more ground in the time. After traversing the northern district as well as possible, Mr Seddon will come south about the Ist. November, and will devote the major portion o : f the remaining time to this end of the district, including a dash into' South Westland.
Members of the executive of the Westland Sub-Union gathered at Keller’s Hotel yesterday afternoon for the purpose of making a small presentation to Hr Buchanan. The 1 President of the Sub-Union (Mr H. M. Coulson), who presided, stated the members of the executive desired to mark, in a small way, their appreciation of the services rendered by Hr Buchanan throughout the football season in giving first aid to players who were unfortunate enough to be injured on the football grounds. He asked acceptance of a handsome pipe in case as* a small token of their appreciation. The doctor’s health was then toasted with musical honours. Hr Buchanan expressed his surprise at any recognition of what was ordy a natural action on bis part. At the same time he appreciated the kindly thoughts that had caused this gift, which he trusted to be able to use at many football games in the future. He also took the opportunity of suggesting • the insurance of players against accident. A further toast was honoured and the gathering dispersed.
