COWS KILLED
[By Telegraph, Per Press Association.! DANNEV HIKE, October 15. The express train ifrom Wellington to Napier on Saturday afternoon ran into some cows, at the Maharahara crossing, belonging to J. J. Doyle, a farmer in the vicinity, eleven being kmed. An eye-witness remarked that it was a miracle some of the front carriages were not derailed. The locomotive was very little damaged, but the rails are-slightly twisted. The cows got out of the paddock through a gap in the fence, caused by the heavy wind. About 1 25 out of 50 had crossed the line just as the train came round the bend, about 400 yards away. The engine driver blew toe whistle, which apparently frightened the animals, which were over the crossing, and, cow-like, they immediately stampeded back. A jamb occurred and although the train driver applied the emergency brakes, the engine dashed into the mob with the above-mentioned results.
Mr Doyle estimates his loss at between £2OO and £3OO.
