DEMENTED MOTHER, HURLS FAMILY INTO RIVER. 'United Press Association.—By Electric Telegraph.—Copyright.) NEW YORK, October 13. Detroit reports that an unidentified woman, both ill and demented, hurled her live children and herself into u river from the Belle Isle bridge. The coastguard dragged out the mother and two children, and rushed them to ti.e hospital. It, is probable that their lives will be saved, but the others were drowned. FIJI ...ORDER. SUVA, October 13. It is reported that a murder has occurred at Niltuvu, in Fiji, (following a case of arson, the dead body of an Indian being found in a copra sack, with several knife wounds.
SINGAPORE DOCK. FIRST PART ARRIVES SAFELY SINGAPORE, October 13. The first portion of the gigantic floating dock, which is to form a part of the naval base here,- has arrived safely, and it enteVed the Job ore straits to-day, ’being successfully moored. The second part is due on Monday. EARLS OF LONSDALE AND , STRATHMORE. RUGBY, Oct. 11l The King has approved that the Earl of Lonsdale be appointed a Knight of the Garter. The Earl of Lonsdale is a large landowner in the North -of England, and lias become one of the most popular personalities in the country by his keen association with various forms of sport. He is one of the most active members of the Jockey Club and one of the most prominent supporters of boxing. The King has also approved that the Earl of Strathmore and Kinghorne be appointed a Knight of the Thistle. The Scottish Earldom of Strathmore was created in 1677, the present Earl being the fourteenth. He is the father of the Duchess of York.

According to Le Matin, a French journalist visited the Press Department of the Foreign Office while the chief official was holidaying, and saw a young deputy official. He discussed the Naval Agreement, and the visitor said he wished to contradict false rumours. The official allowed him to see the document for his own guidance. The visitor took the document to Horan who had it copied. SMUGGLED DIAMONDS. CAPETOWN, Oct, 13. Government seized large quantities of diamonds smuggled from Nomaqualand State Diggings followed by five arrests. It is reported diamonds are obtainable- from the natives of an estimated value of £70,000. Numbers of illicit diamonds have reached Europe, and a trade crisis is feared.

The '“Sunday Times” says Mr Baldwin has agreed to Lord Birkenhead s withdrawal immediately from the Cabinet for the purpose of commercial activities in the city. A majority of diplomatic correspondents repeat that Lord Birkenhead will take a commercial career in the city forthwith. The “Daily Express” forecasts that Lord Peel will be his successor and adds that letters exchanged between Lord Birkenhead and Mr Baldwin will ho published in a few days. Tt is understood that Lord Birkenhead will join a company with world wide interests with an income three times the five thousand lie receives as a Cabinet Minister.
