(By Telegraph—Per Press Association.) DUNEDIN, October 12. The New Zealand golf championships commenced this morning nt Balmacewan. The gale ol : the night died to a light northerly. The course is very hard and the greens liery. It is a veiy representative gathering of the cream of New Zealand golf, with two exceptions, Arthur Duncan, among the amateurs, and E. J. Moss, the professional, present holder of the open championship. The first round of the open championships will be decided by four rounds of medal play, which commenced at 8.30, in conjunction with the first qualifying round ol the amateur and professional championships. The first thirty-two amateurs, and the first eight professionals, respectively, qualify.
