MAGISTRATE'S COURT

THURSDAY, OCTOBER 11th. (Before W. ALeldrum, Esq., 5.M,.) AFTER HOURS. The police charged seven offenders wtih being found unlawfully on licensed premises (Post Office Hotel). There was no appearance. Convicted and each ordered to pay costs 10s. LICENSING' ACT. The police charged J. Lloycl with selling, exposing liquor and opening premises (Post Office Hotel) during prohibited hours and unlawfully supplying and J. Cowie (acting licensee) with exposing, selling and opening Cor sale during prohibited hours. Air Murdoch for defendants pleaded not guilty. Sergt. King gave evidence that on visiting the Post Office Hotel on 29th September he found seven men in the sitting room (who had already, been convicted). The bar was fully lighted, exposing the contents and the barman handed out two long beers and he took a shilling off the socle. Airs Cow e. wife of the licensee, obtained perin.ssion to carry on lor three months during the absence of the'licensee. A! >'s Cowie was in bed at the time of his visit.

J. Lloyd gave evidence that on the night in question he supplied two drinks and took Is from a boarder. He had not received any money tor fi e drinks served previously - Janet Cowie gave evidence she was the wife of the licensee. She was in bed at the time of the alleged offeree. She knew nothing about what had happened till afterwards. Her general instructions were not to serve alter hours. Mr Murdoch agreed that the barman must he convicted, but quoted a reccif decision of the Appeal Court, by five judges, which he held clearly exonerated the licensee under the circumstances as disclosed. His Worship reserved judgment until next sitting. MOTOR REGULATIONS. A. boolt-Robiiison was charged b\the police with leaving his car in Sewell Street, facing the wrong way. Fined 5s and costs 10s. 'SeaHe Bros, were charged by. the Borough Inspector <M r Park) w'ib leaving a car at night without a pi open light. Fined 5s and costs 335. DEBT CASES. Two cases were called, otic being adjourned and the other settled.
