CYCLE ROAD RACE
TIM ABU TO CHLBISTCHURCH. AVON BY ABXST. (By Telegraph—Press Association). . CITE TSTC’H f ARCH. Oct. 6. A traditional north-wester prevailed for the Timaru-Christcliurch road race to-day. There were many patches of loose shingle, with clouds of dust rising on parts of the mad between Ashburton and Christchurch. The limit men got away sharp to time at 9.5 a.in., and it was 3.25 p.m. when the winner entered the Showground to the. accom.paniiiient of a burst of cheering.
The winner was B. Avnst, who won in the big amateur road rate last Saturday, but was disqualified for allegedly accepting motor pace* in the race. To-day he could find no one who would ride fast enough to please? him. and for practically the whole journey he rode alone. He is a young rider, who will he heard of as his famous uncles. Jack and Dick Arn.st. wore, in their day, The fastest time was made by S. AV. McCann. of New Plymouth, who. like Arnst, had to make his own pace. Turning into Lincoln Road, lie showed an amazing hurst of speed, doing 27 miles an hour to ride in alone in fifth place. The platings of the first twelve men home were:—

Coo,eh, Hokitika (38 min) (i hours 24 min 29 sec, .Immediately after the finish, a protest was lodged against Arnst. oil the ground that he had entered for the race after the entries were closed. Tt is said to be very unlikely that the protest- will ib t > sustained, for the 'Executive of the North Canterbury, Centro ol the N./, Athletic lend Ceding Hnion mot last week, and the Conference decided to accept late entries. Arnst entered for (1.10 VUee on Tuesday. PROTEST DISMISSED. CHRISTCHURCH, Oct. 7. In the road race, out of 99 entrants, 88 faced the starter. The protest: against the winner wits dismissed.
