STATEMENT. BY AIR G. R. HUNTER October 5.; Air G. R.’ Hunter, - who recently re signed-his position as chairman of the Works Committee of-the Christchurch City Council, and as councillor, was in Wellington to-day.*- He stated, in an interview; that he was very - pleased that the Council' had decided to refer the matter at issue in connexion with his action, to'the Works Committee for investigation.'’-He would* be • glad to place before, the Committee all the facts to his;-, alleged 'trading Witli the. Council. 1 He would go further than that and say that he could confidently face the electors, and fight the by-election on the issue. In so far as the Election was concerned, however, the matter would rest'With the" North* Canterbury Representation Committee.

Arthur;' of WellingtonThe facts.are that in November 1927; defendant proposed to the. plaintiff company for insurance on his motorcar, and in. the same month the company isstied him a policy. It contained a condition that: all disputes arising thereunder were to be referred to arbitration. A dispute arose with, reference to the amount payable by the company to defendant for, an accident alleged to have occurred to his car, and in the course of correspondence the company required , defendant to refer the amount to lbe paid to. arbitration. Defendant, however, refused-and issued a summons-ijr.-thoVAlagirtrate’s Court c 1 aimihg.£2oo from the company. The company thereupon -filed a motion in straining defendant fromproceeding' with his action.cm. the .-groqnd that they were entitled to liave the amount, due to defendant ascertained, by : arbitration.
Tlie question whether the arbitration clause is effective to exclude completely the jurisdiction of the Magistrate’s Court being one of wide* effect; the case was removed on the ..order of the presiding judge for argument in the Court of Appeal. Judgement was reserved.

DAMAGE FEARED IN WAIMAK CHIHSTCHURCH, October 7. The Waimakariri River, : which inn been on the verge of flooding for a whole'week, and did actually flood on Friday, is. now, still in heavy flood. Heavy rain has fallen in the watershed of the river. A serious flood is now feared.
LYTTELTON I)AM AGE CHRISTCHURCH, October 7. A heavy nor’-west gale blew during the night at Lyttelton. The force of the wind wrecked a large wool store in course of erection for the Shaw Savill Cq. The framework had been completed and the roof was on.. The wind blew the roof off, and a large part of the framing .was also brought down. It is not easy to estimate the extent of the damage, but probably it wll exceed £IOOO. v GIRL’S DEAD BODY. FOUND IN SCRUB. AUCKLAND October 6. The dead body of Elsie Walker aged ieighteen years, was found face downwards among some scrub in a scoria pit at Panmure. The were no external marks of violence. The deceased was wearing a youth’s overcoat. She was the daughter of Drenzy Walker, of Raukokori, near Opotiki. For some time past the girl had been employed by Mr and .Mrs Frank Bavley, at Papamoa, near Tepuke, Mr Bayley. being an uncle- of the deceased. It is thought that the deceased, on Monday last/, took Baylev’s motor-car and drove away. The car was found abandoned at Papatoetoe on Monday evening.
