GALE IN ATLANTIC. 1 WORST FOR THREE YEARS. (British Official Wireless.) RUGBY, October 4. The fiercest gale that has been experienced on the direct EnglandAmerica route ifor three years has been raging for over twenty-four hours over a wide area in mid-Atlantic. Wireless message from ships at present crossing the Atlantic have shown that winds of worse than gale force have been blowing from all points of the compass over some 4000 square miles. The Cunarder, Carmania, from a position 1100 miles west of Ireland, reported westerly winds of storm force, which are comparable with the hurricanes which have recently caused much damage in America and the West Indies. These conditions are said to arise ifrom a very deep depression which is moving slowly eastward, and meteorologists state that it may be tjie outcome of the recent tornadoes. Experts forecast that the maximum intensity will be reached before the depression reaches the European coasts.

QUIETER ENGINES. OMNIBUS COMPANY’S EXPERIMENTS. RUGBY, October 4. A step towards the silencing of traffic noises is being taken by the London General Omnibus Company, which has successfully completed bench tests with a new type of engine, which is now being fitted to a vehicle so that tests may be continued under actual service conditions. The engine, which develop 100 horsepower, has two overhead camshafts, hitherto used only in racing cars and luxurious passenger vehicles, and the crankshaft has seven main bearings, while the cylinders are single piece castings. Another engine to be tested has a single overhead crankshaft. Eventually the engine that gives the best all-round performance will b adopted for the future by the company, PORTUMNA CASTLE. RUGBY, October 4. Portumna Castle was bequeathed to Viscount Lascelles by his uncle, the last Earl of Clanricarde, a millionaire peer, who died in 1916. The Viscount’s interest in the estate was great# esteemed by the country people, who were looking forward, to the visit of Princess Mary with keen anticipation.

1 PRINCES TOUR. v NATIVE WELCOME. RUGBY, October 4. The Prince of Wales, who, with his brother, the Duke* o*f Gloucester, is visiting Kenya, yesterday made the acquaintance of native chiefs and councillors, who, attired in full ceremonial dress, received* the Royal visitors in their camp near Nairobi. The warriors welcomed him in traditional fashion, dancing and shouting their greetings, while the Prince inspected the camp and examined the various weapons and methods adopted in using them. ■ The Prince formally presented to the chiefs photographs of himself in the uniform of the Welsh Guards.

Great appreciation of the visit of the Prince of Wales to the native chiefs is expressed in a letter to the ( ‘Nairobi Press,” which is signed by the five paramount.chiefs. They say that above all they were greatly impressed by the fact that the Prince addressed them }n Kiswahili, their native tongue, which he studied while on his voyage to Africa.

The Prince is now interesting himself in preparation for the of Gloucester’s sefari, or big game hunt. The Duke is expected to set out tomorrow through the lonely interior. The Prince has visited the site of the Duke of Gloucester’s first camp, which is stuated 15 miles from Nairobi.
