AUCKLAND, Oct. 3

At the New Zealand ladies’ golf tournament., the second bogey handicap was won by Misses Guy and Rattray. The cup for the best aggregate in the two bogey handicaps was won by Miss M. Allen.

A SERIOUS CHARGE. GORE, October 4. At Gore • Court, Arthur Robert Smith, a hairdresser, pleaded not guilty to a charge that with intent that she be unlawfully carnally known, he did' take a girl under 18 from the possession of her employer. Police evidence showed the accused and the girl had gone from Gore to Christchurch, where they lived together. Counsel for the defence argued there was no persuasion by accused in taking the girl away, as she was going iii any case, owing to pregnancy.

The Magistrate adjourned the case to iook into the authorities. Bail of £IOO in his own recogisance was allowed. Accused is a married man with a yoying family. INQUEST VERDICT. GORE, October 4. Mary Cunningham, a married woman aged 40 years, collapsed at the Gore Hpspjtal, prior, to undergoing an operation. ' . •

At the inquest the doctor’s evidence showed that death was, due to - heart failure, the contributing causes being septic poisoning due td penumonia and pressure on the ’ heart thrqugh the accumulation of fluid on the right side of the chest and the depressing effect of the anaesthetic.

John Harper Page, on thirteen charges of false pretences, was sentenced at the Magistrate’s Court on two charges to three months’ imprisonment each, the sentences to be, cumulative. : BURGLAR CAUGHT:. - AUCKLAND, Oct. 4; At Onehunga, at 11.50 last night, a lady resident saw a light in the shop of Osborne, a grocery shop, and stood guard at the front while a friend watched the rear of the premises. The police and Osborne were 'sent for, and on arrival foitnd evidence of an illegal entry by the kitchen and a. strange hammer alongside the safe. Hiding inside of. the ropf, was a -Maori, who. stated lie was sent there by a white man whom he described. Tire Maori was arrested on a charge of breaking and entering. This is the third burglary at Osborne’s shop in a few. months.

WAIMAKARIRI IN FLOOD. CHRISTCHURCH, Oct. 4. At 11 a.m. to-day the Waimakariri River had risen five feet above normal and was still rising at the rate of three inches an hour, with heavy rains falling in the back and high temperature melting the snow. There is every cause to expect a flood of some magnitude.

ARBITRATION COURT, AUCKLAND, Oct. 4. When the parties concerned in the Dominion freezing industry ..dispute appeared at the Arbitration Court, Judge Frazer commented on the fact that nearly every '-point before the Conciliation Court had been referred to the Court for settlement. The employees are. asking for a x'enewal of the existing award, with minor amendments covering overtime, transportation of workers, etc. His Honour said it has been the rule of the Court to refuse to deal with claims for an excessive number of variations in awards which had become more or less standardised. The rule was that only matters that had .cropped up since the last award would be dealt with. He asked the parties to confer again, and narrow down the issues. This course was adopted.

MISSING GIRL FOUND. AUCKLAND, Oct. 4. The girl, Rona Passmore’, reported missing from her home since has been located in a city suburb and is reported to be safe. .
