LABOR CONFERENCE

There were stormy scenes'at the Labour .Conlierence when Mr MacDonald moved the second reading of the exeentire's, twenty-two thousand word manifesto entitled “Labour and thq Nation,” which was variously described as “.fine// “recreative,” and “ construct! ve.” It is not merely a programme for next' election but for years to come, carrying out the full Socialist » idea. It emphasised that industrial peace was dependent oh labour continually increasing its control and management of economic power and moreover, a status equal to that of capitalists behind the Government nuist be restored .to the workers. A Labour Government would not be in power long before it would introduce a minimum wage. They must also find . means of pooling wealth. Ml* J. Maxton, who was sloudly cheered, declared he wanted a programme, not a thesis. Labourites would not win the election if they stretched out ( to everybody.wanting help. 1 An interrupter shouted: “We got ; yqu-, Jimmy.” Maxton replied: “You are not going ■to have me alone. Finally, turning to the leaders seated on the platform he flung out his arm and shouted : ,MacDonald,,- Lansbury, Henderson, and Snowden.’ We insist on you redeeming your promises.” Commoner Shimvell. contended that Labourites wanted power, not a programme. If they had a programme it must be short, concise and understand able by everybody. 1i; ..
