NEW ZEALAND SCENERY.

INOMEARKD APPRIN T AT I ON

WELLINGTON, October 2

A kernel* public interest in the Dominion’s scenic reserves is attributed by the Scenery Preservation Board to the largely increased use of private motor-cars, rendering it possible tor many people to visit areas well away from main centres of population. 'The increased use now being made oi many .reserves has brought with it additional responsibilities and difficulties in connection with control and management but, it is pleasing to record that visitors generally appear to appreciate the fact that the welfare ol reserves rests largely-in their-hands, ana that it is incumbent on them to assist, 'in the preservation of bush. it has been found necessary in spipe- eases-to issue permits to camp on certain reserves under reasonable,, eoiidit.ons but it is not proposed to allow campnig except oil reserves adapted 'tor the purpose, and then only under proper safeguarding conditions. s

including the National Parks in tli e North Island, and large areas ol tii 1 Southern Alps, there are 464,000 acres of scenic reserves in New Zealand. The reservation,- of further areas o'f Crown lands and the acquisition of privately owned lands of scenic and historic interest are being*, carried out as .opportunity permits. , . :

The report states that the expecliture on scenery preservation for the • year ended March, 1928, was £6599, while from 190 i to that date the total • expenditure fluctuates to, ±>19(3,205. Expenditure fluctuates considerably from year to year, and activity in the direction of acquiring, new areas .is governed to a large, extent by the funds made available ,to the, .Department |'or the work, ft ..is hoped that by enlisting the sympathies c*f city, borough and county councils, etc. it will be possible to aid materially the cause of scenery preservation.
