CUP FOR NEW ZEALAND

LONDON, Aug. 24

Twenty British raisers of narcissi have subscribed £.j each for a challenge cup to- be presented to “Lovers of the flower in New Zealand for Narcissi raised in the British Isles and exhibited in Ne-w /Zea Jan-d.” It is going to the National Daffodil Society of New Zealand, of which Sir R. Heaton Rhodes is president. The cup, which is for annual competition, hears the following inscription : “The British Challenge Cup. Presented by British Raisers to Lovers of the flower in New Zealand for Narcissi raised in the British Isles and exhibited in New Zealand. Far home Home, and yet at Home.” It nas also inscribed on the base the names of the donors. There are also five small replicas, one of which will he presented at each annual event to the winner.

The cup is silver-gilt, and is an exact replica of one of three which were presented by the House of Commons to the President of the- French Republic when he visited London at the time of the inauguration of the Entente Cordials in the reign of King Edward ATI. It was at that time specially selected as being typical of the best British silversmith’s work.

The presentation of this cun’ is mainly due to the efforts of Mr P. D. Williams, of “Lanarth,’’ St-. Keverne. R.S.O. Cornwall. Mr Williams approached Sir James Parr with, Lis suggestion, and the High Commissioner informed him that he thought the idea was an excellent one, and that he would be. pleased to take charge of the cup and arrange for it to he sent to jew Zealand As a result, the cup is now being shipped to New Zealand by the High Commissioner by an early steamer.
