PROMINENT FARMER DEAD. (By Telegraph—Press Association). CHRISTCHURCH, October 3. Obituary.—John Cunningham, aged 59. He was a prominent Ellesmere farmer and a member of the Main Highways Board. A PROPOSAL NOT FAVOURED. CHRISTCHURCH, October 3. Instructions that a circular letter from the Secretary of the New Zealand Federated Builders’ and Contractors’ Association should be treated as “ private and confidential ” were disregarded by unanimous decision at last night’s meeting of Canterbury Build; ers’ Association. The letter dealt with a proposal that the Government should establish a forest products laboratory, the outstanding prospects of which Were the kiln-drying of timber, wood preservation and timber testing. After discussion the meeting resolutioned expressing the opinion that there was no need whatever for such a laboratory. * / CORONER \S INQUEST. NEW PLYMOUTH, Oct. 3. At the inquest on the body of the boy, Leo Hobman, who died in the hospital on September 26th as the result of burns received on May 18th, a charge was made by the father of neglect by the hospital staff to dress the wounds for a period of nine days. The. medical, evidence showed that the usual treatment was followed. The medical superintendent expressed surprise that the boy survived his wpitiids more than two days. ' ‘ The Coroner accepted the medical evidence and , found death was due to chronic toexma. OiL drum explosion. WORKER’S PAINFUL INJURIES. WELLINGTON, October 2. An explosion in a steel drum caused painful facial injuries to John Henry McConvill at Petone. McConvill, who is employed by the Allender Soap Works, in Udy Street, was swilling out with sulphuric acid and water the interior of the drum, which contained oil of citfonella, when the contents exploded with such force as to blow the'eiict pf the drum through a three-inch concrete wall,''across 1 a short lane and' through a fence on the other side—in. all, a distance of about 30 yards. McConvill received part of tlie force of the explosion,' together Avith somWacid, oil the face. He was remvoed 'to Wei- 1 lington Hospital.
! * : JUDGMENT GIVEN. pi,is ' WESTPORT, Octi- 3. Reserved judgment was given by Mr Meldrum, in the Magistrate’s Court this morning in the Denniston Miners’ Demonstration. All charges against the Union Officials were dismissed, and also charges against a woman for alleged insulting language.
