(By Telegraph—P.er Press Association,). TR.ENTHAM SCHOLARSHIP FUND. WELLINGTON, Sept. 24. The Trentham Scholarship War Fund report shows that 287 applicators for 'bursaries were received last year, compared wth 228 the previous year. Of these 145 were renewed, and 89 new applications granted. The total is now 5025 with 45 refused. Since then mostly request applicants, 17 grants, totalling £272 10s were cancelled. The excess of expenditure over income was £1,539, this, after allowing for £2OOO contributed by the Canteen Fund.. The assets in hand amounted to £28,935. Since the inception of the fund £27,275 have been paid out. The balance in band as designed, will last for twelve years, but this will to some extent depend on the contributions from the Canteen Fund, without which generous assistance, the report says, it would !be impossible to meet the ever’growing demand on the fund.

BODY RECOVERED. WAIHI, Sept. 24. The body of William Dean, aged 73, was recovered in a deep hole in the Ohinemuri River, between Waihi and Waikino, yesterday forenoon, s The deceased was an old Canterbury setFngland in 1854. Fraser (Wellington Central) going 'so far as to say that he had never heard n good reason for urging their appointment. It seemed to him that if women police were appointed the Commissioner woodd almost have to invent jobs for them. Mr Wilford (Hut-t) said that if the propei- type of woman could be obtained female police might be, useful, but it was bis experience that the type offering were of such a natiire,., that they should not he let loose on. the community for wo rids'(laughter), The kind that offered their services when lie was Minister of Justice had finished him. Women of the world would be all right, but the type that' wanted to be police were likely tb rush recklessly into trouble. Their prejudices came from their hearts and not from their heads.

The Minister of Justice agreed that much depended on the type of woman appointed. Police matrons in New Zealand did useful work and a certain amount of patrolling.
