SLATER’S APPEAL. CONAN DOYLE TO FIND CQSTS Australian Press Assn.—United Servico LONDON, September 18. The Scottish Office is refusing to pay the costs of Oscar Slater’s appeal (which was-succcssful) against his conviction for murder for which he served a long sentence. The cost amounted to about £ISOO. The public subscription in aid of Slater amounted to £7GO. Sir A. Conan Doyle, having guaranteed £IOOO, will have to find £3OO. Ho expresses the opinion that the Scottish Office should pay tlie lot, as its stupidity created the situation. THE NEW FILMS. LONDON, September 18. The so-called “Talky-Soundy” films which carry their own musical and vocal accompaniment, are now likely to throw two-thirds of the cinema musicians out of work in Britain in the next two years. It is estimated that another fifty thousand musicians will shortly be thrown out of America, where the “Talky-Soundies” are thus effecting an economy of at least one million sterling annually.
The Musicians’ i Union ■ of JBritain where more than three thousand orchestras have been brought into existence by the cinemas, are endeavouring to obtain a guarantee that at least one-third of the musicians who are now in employment shall be retained by the industry, to supplement the tinned music or to deputise when the machinery goes out of order.
