WESTLAND PROGRESS LEAGUE

MONDAY,/ SEPT. 17th

The Committee of the league met at 7.35 o’clock at the County Chambers last evening. Present: Dr Teichelinann (President) in the chair, AY. J. Butler, W. Jeffries, J. Dew, D. J. Evans, J. AAL Morris (hon. sec.) Apology was made for the absence of Mr Richards. Tlie minutes of the previous meeting were confirmed.

Tlie outward correspondence was read and approved. The meeting passed a vote of sympathy to P. R. Olimie, Secretary of tlie Canterbury Progress League, in connection with tlie death of his father. INWARD CORRESPONDENCE'.

From County Council forwarding £25, Borough Council £lO, Savings Bank £2 2s, contributions to tlie funds. —Received with thanks. From Canterbury Progress League notfying 500 AA’estland booklets had been sent to the Tourist Office a,t AA’olliugton, as requested.—Received. From N.Z. Railways regarding speeding up of the Christchurch train between Greymoutli and Hokitika, stating the. matter had been carefully considered, and it was regretted owi-ng to the number of stops it could not ho done at present.—Received. Tlie matter was discussed at some length. 1 was pointed out the late arrival here could he obviated by an earlier start from Christchurch. The late arrival was inconvenient to tourists and hotel staffs, when evening meals were requir ed after 7 o’clock owing to union working hours It was also pointed out that as Elmer Lane station was now closed, Chesterfield and Kaihinui stops could be eliminated on express nights and save, another quarter of an hour so ns to get the train into Hokitika before 6 o’clock. It was resolved to embody these suggestions in further representations to the Traffic Office. From Tourist Department, AA’ellington, acknowledging receipt of 500 booklets with thanks.—Received. From Christchurch AVeekly Press Coy. with reference to advertising in the Christmas Number.—Received. The President explained this had been arranged for. From Sullivan Bros., AVehekn, urging that twice weekly the south mail should go through to AA'eheka.in one day, and asking support of Canterbury Progress League.—Received. Tlie President said the proposal should bo supported, as it would be quite possible to do the extra distance in good time. It was agreed to support the request made. From C. S. Dalgliesh, AYaimaunga State Farm, indicating that several AYestland farmers were visiting the farm on the 20th. inst. to see the experimental plots, and note the effect of the application of potash for turnip growing, and inviting the League members to attend.—Received and invitation accepted. Mr J. J. Mclntosh to he asked to arrange a party. From Canterbury Progress League, forwarding minutes of monthly meeting.—Received.

From AA r cst Coast Farmers’ Union, Grey mouth, asking support to proposal to cut up land in the Little AVilnganui district to provide for more settlement.—Received. Mr Jeffries suggested support. It was pointed out the matter was now being dealt with by the Minister of Lands, on whose behalf the Under-Secretary was to report. It was decided to await the result of the official enquiry before acting in the matter.

. GENERAL. The Hon. Secretary reported a credit balance of £46.—Received. Mr Jeffries suggested the League should invite Squadron-Leader Kingsford Smith and his party to the district. Captain Buckley was familiar with the. landing possibilities here. If it was not convenient to fly over, perhaps the aviators would make the journey by train in which event the party could he brought over Otira Gorge by ear and taken to the Glaciers, also to Lake Kanieri where speed boat racing could be indulged in. Tiie suggestion was endorsed very heartily by the President and others, and it was resolved that a telegram he sent extending the invitation. CHAMBEiR. OH COMMERCE BUSINESS. Mr W. J. Butler was appointed delegate to the annual conference to he held at Wellington on the 12th. October on the motion of Mr Jeffries, seconded by Air Bruce. The meeting rose at 8.10 p.m.
