ALPS BLAZING BEACONS. GENEVA, August 1. From scores of Alpine peaks tonight beacons are blazing in commemoration of the 637th anniversary of the histo ■ic pact made by mon of the primitive cantons of Uri, Scliwyn and Untenvaldon which laid the foundation of the present Swiss Confederation. Often at 'the risk their lives guides and patriotic citizens during the last week have made repeated jounneys to lofty summits, carrying dry fuel. At a given signal the beacons Hared out, lighting up the great snowy wastes with a lurid glare which could lie seen for miles around. LIGHTS LIKE GEMS. On the vast nmph illieatre of mountains bordering Lake Geneva the mul- ( titude of lights glistened like gems in a diadem of some astral goddess, while cascades of rockets and multicoloured Hares turned the foothills into ii fiiiryhiml. All over the country huge bonfires lit up lake shores, while on Alpine pastures nr in city squares patriots gathered in homage to the three stalwart men whose courageous gesture on the historic meadow at Grutli brought the Swiss nation into being.
