THE WATERSIDERS

(Australian Press Association.) SYDNEY, Sept. 10. Nearly all of the wharf labourers presented themselves at the morning “pick-up” but when calls were made for an afternoon “pick-lip” tbe men refused to commence. ' .There was also a general refusal to work in Newcastle, Port Kernbln, Hobart, Launceston and Brisbane. ! So far only a few ships arc affected but if the trouble extends a general hold up of all shipping is anticipated. SHIPOWNERS ATTITUDE. (Received this day at 9.30 a.m). SYDNEY, Sept. 11. Shipowners are determined that the Watersiders’ Award shall be obeyed. They have anticipated trouble for many weeks and oversea and inter-Stato companies have now joined forces. They have refused to grant the Waterside Federation a Conference, because the basis of discussion is the old award, Losal proceedings will be taken against any breach of the Union, which resists the second d ily pick-up. The owners have written to the Federation expressing the hope that the Federation will withdraw from the position it has taken up. A SERIOUS POSITION. SYDNEY, Sept, 11. AH vessels at Brisbane wharves and Tasmanian wharves wore idle yesterday. No labour was offered at the afternoon pick-ups. About thirty vessels arc affected, including overseas liners. The steamer Canberra sailed front Townvillc, the absent firemen returning to duty. There is no trouble so far at Fremantle, but if afternoon labour is required there, it will not he provided. A prolonged struggle at the present moment would bo disastrous, owing tr the desire of shippers to get wool sway, of which four million pounds' worth is awaiting shipment.
