A further supply of 150,000 brown trout ova arrived from the Southland Acclimatisation Society last evening, and were taken out to the Lake Kanicri hatchery to be hatched- for tho benolit of the Grey and AVestland Societies.
The Committee of the AVestland Acclimatisation and Tourist Society will meet at 7.30 o’clock on Monday evening. Included in the business will be consideration of the draft rules and by-laws under revision for the Society.

“ The time is approaching when a squad of police motor-cyclists will he required at each of the principal centres of population,” declared the Commissioner of Police (Mr W. B. Mcllveney) in his annual report to Parliament. “ With the -trend of modern transport, making for considerable rapidity of movement,” the Commissioner said, “it lias become essential for the members of the Police Department to have at their command for immediate use in connexion with the detection and prevention of crime high-class and highpowered motor-cycles. For constant supervision, and inspection duties by the commissioned officers, to expedite the performance of their general work, and for emergency requirements of the detectives, suitable motor-cars are indispensable. An increase in the number of those at present ill use is very urgently required.”
There were smaller entries of fat sheep and fat cattle at the weekly stock salo n't Addington on Wednesday. In the case of the sheep the drop in numbers was most marked, there being only ten races, compared with fourteen and a half at the previous sale. In spite of the smaller entry, the sale opened with a rather slack demand, hut there was an improvement later, prices advancing by Is to 2s a head on late rates. Competition for fat cattle was irregular, hut generally Inst week’s prices wore maintained. Store sheep were yarded in small numbers. They again sold well, though hoggets did not maintain the improved values of a week ago. The number of spring lambs penned was in excess of butchers’ requirements, and nil hut the best sorts declined in price. No quotable lines of store cattle came forward. Good sorts of dairy cuttle sold well, and there was also an active demand lor killable vealcre. Bnconers improved in price, with porkers firm at late rates. Store pigs sold ns well as they did at the previous sale. We wish to announce to our numerous customers that wo have opened up the smartest designs in linoleum and dainty curtain nets. There was a great rush this morning to book seats for the season of “ The Reveille,” which opens on Tuesday next, and a large number of seats were taken. Patrons are advised not to delay in securing seats as there is every prospect otf crowded attendances each session.
In connection with the production of '.Reveille next Week ia handsome souvenir booklet Ims been issued containing particulars of the programme to be provided with the names of those taking part in the various numbers. The business people of the district have also given their assistance and have included advertisements therein. The booklet is being sold at sixpence per copy and is meeting with a ready sale.
As the result of prosecutions last year, bookmakers in New Zealand contributed £-1829 to the coffers of tile State. The annual report of the Police Department, presented to Parliament, states that out of 36 prosecutions for carrying on the business of a bookmaker, 27 convictions were recorded, while there were 47 convictions out of 57 prosecutions for keeping a common gaming-house. Eight convictions were entered against persons laying totalisator odds, seven for street betting, and 110 for hotting with a bookmaker.
The .Tiivoni!<• Ball in connection'with the Hospital Hall held tin the Drill Hall last evening attracted an overflowing attendance of both children nmd adults. There were a great many fancy dresses among the children, and many showed to great advantage. The judges had a very difficult task in awarding the .prizes, hut unluckily they did not secure the names of the winners and we are therefore unable to publish same. The supper arrangements were again a feature the ladies committee providing a plentiful supply. Members of the Canterbury Rugby team were present and after 10 o’clock dancing was continued. The floor, which unfortunately got very dusty, was filled with dancers until an early hour.
