A word repeatedly heard in the Hamilton Supremo Court in a case, arising out of a fatal motor accident, was “.shimmy,” which was employed by witnesses, counsel and Judge, to describe the wobble which sometimes develops in the front wheels of a motor vehicle through the bushes wearing out. The opinion was expressed by several witnesses that a “shimmy” would develop suddenly and that it was quite feasible for the defect to cause a driver to lose control of bis vehicle through the steering gear becoming affected.

In the House yesterday Mr Seddon asked whether, taking into consideration the present heavy timber traffic across Toremakau Bridge, would he cause an inquiry to be made into the system of levying contributions from the local bodies towards the maintenance of the bridge, with a view to relieving Kumara, Borough Council of its hoary obligation? The present system was instituted in 1907 and conditions have materially altered since then. Hon. K. S. Williams said the contributions from tlie local bodies towards the maintenance of the Tercmakau Bridge at ICumara lmd been fixed as the result of the. finding of a Commission specially set up lor that purpose many years ago. He was aware the position had changed. Inquiry was being made, and AH’ Seddon would he informed later of the result of the investigations.

The annual Hospital Ball took place in the Drill flail last evening and attracted a largu attendance, though not quite up to the numbers of previous years, hut the floor was over-crowded throughout most of the evening. Very lavish and effective decoration made the hall a veritable beauty bower, and with the many-coloured dresses ol the fair sex the scene was a gay and festive one. Fancy dresses were not in as largo numbors as usual and their effectiveness suffered considerably. The supper was laid ia the Town Hall and here an army of lady workers had provided a very choice and plentilul supply of good catables, attending promptly to the appetites of patrons. Capital music was supplied by Ross’ Orchestra, Messrs H. Davidson and C. Bleach being in charge of the floor. Jhe Judges of the fancy costumes (Mesdnmes C. A. Perry and Wright and .Messrs Jeffries and Evans) made the following awards: —.Most original costume. H. Stapleton (wolf in sheep’s clothing); best dressed Leslie (powder and patches). Teams competition—“ The Wedding Parly,” highly commended Hospital Nurses.

In connection with the fire in Upper Sewell Street on Sunday morning, wo understand, that at the time the first alarm was given by the smaller hells, the acting night-watchman was in Revell .Street, in the vicinity of Welti Street, together with Constable Randall, making an investigation into a strong smell of burning paper in that kvmlity. Not finding anything to warrant further investigation, the two walked down Revell Street towards the No. 1 Station, and it was only on arriving at the intersection of Hamilton Street that they became aware of anything untoward happening, then finding men engaged in pulling out a hose reel. They were then advised of the fire, but up to then no sound .of the other bells bad reached them, and the main (irebell was at once sounded. This accounts for the time that elapsed between the ringing of the smaller hells and that at the main station. The presence of the niglitwatchnian off the tower at that hour is the result of the instructions of the Fire Board.for him to patrol portion of Revell St. at least once each night, the actual hour of the patrol being varied as tlie nightwatchman may deem fit.
