(By Telegraph—Per Press Association.) BANKRUPT SOLICITOR. CHRISTCHURCH, September 4. At tho Supreme Court to-day, Judge Adams made an order adjudicating as a bankrupt, John Black Batchelor, a missing solicitor. Counsel said Batchelor bad loft the city to dofent or delay bis creditors.
Leonard Percival Voice, the petitioning creditor, said bo bad given L9S(i to Batchelor to pay as purchase money on a bouse. The money bad not been paid. Later Batciiclor put in a cheque for the amount but it was dishonoured. A police sergeant evidenced that no traco had been found of Batchelor, though inquiries had been made cl! over New Zealand.
POLITICAL WOODVILLE, Sept. 4. Eight.v-f’om* Reform delegates, l-epre-sentativos of the whole electorate, mot at AVoodville last evening to select, a candidate to contest tho Pahiatua seat. The meeting passed a resolution of confidence in Mr Coatos. It unanimously selected George Harold Smith, Solicitor, of Pahiatua, as the Reform candidate. Arch McNicol, who stood for the last three elections, declined nomination for business reasons. Tho meeting was a very enthusiastic one. Hon R. A. "Wright, Minister of Education, also spoke.
■OBITUARY. DUNEDIN, Sept. 4. Obituary.—Rev. AV.' Gray Dixon, D.D., 74, formerly Moderator of the General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church. JAPANESE POULTRY EXPERT. AUCKLAND, Sept. 4. A passenger by the Ulimaroa from Sydney to-day was H. Nakamichi, a Japanese Government poultry expert, whose mission is to ascertain if paying strains here are high enough of a standard to warrant purchases of birds on a somewhat liberal scale. He is particularly interested in white leghorns ami black orpingtons. Japan lmd Ibeen importing from China about two million pounds worth of eggs per annum, but the Japanese bad now adopted Hie slogan our own liens and fresh eggs. A SERIOUS CHARGE, MASTERTON, Sept. 4. At the Supreme Court this morning a true bill was found against Walter Scott Bagby, a jockey, on a charge of rape. Accused pleaded not guilty. The Court was cleared and evidence was given on lines similar to that in the lower Court.
DANGER, FROAI SLIP. GISBORNE, Sept. 4. As the result of a slip in Tearai A’alley a fortnight ago, when the hillside suddenly slid into Reay stream, a lake has been formed and fears are expressed that the impounded waters may break away suddenly. Settlers lower down the valley are'taking precautions to remove stock. AYhen the slip occurred it was impossible to estimate accurately the loss of stock, but it is "now stated tire loss of one settler, L. Macintosh, amounts to 200 sheep. Forty sheep and two horses left alive on the top of thd slip are still there and it lias been found impossible to rescue them.
AN INQUEST. WELLINGTON. Sept. 4. An inquest was held to-day before Mr Page S.M. with regard to the deatli at AA’ellington Hospital of Adrienne Alary Stouppe single, aged 20. Dr Rhind, evidenced that on eighth of August bo wa,s called to the hospital to see deceased whom be found suffering from acute generalised peroti.nitis, and bad recently lmd a miscarriage. She died oil 10th. August. Dr Lynch, who performed tho post mortem, could not say if an instrument had been used. Tlie mother evidenced that lier daughter had 'been taken to the doctor for the treatment of nerves, but witness did not know she was pregnant. The daughter on the Ist. August said she was going to AVnikaiine- for a rest for ten days. AA’itnoss did not see her daughter till the Bth. 'August, when slip came home and appeared very ill. AA'itness asked her where she bad boon but her daughter would not say a word who was responsible for her pregnancy. Dr Clay, who bad been called to the home on August Stli, ashed tlie court’s ruling, when asked by Chief Detective AVard, if deceased said who caused the miscarriage.
Mr Page said he thought the doctor should answer. Dr Clay said the deceased said it was Dr Heiinessy. Other evidence included a witness Ralph Heaton AVear, an engineer, a married man, who worked at the same place as deceased. He said he sometimes took her part of the way home in a car but lie never took her out on other occasions. He declined to say whether he saw her on Ist August oi Bth August. He admitted having gone to AYaikanae on the latter,but would nut say whether be bad received a
telegram there. Chief Detective: Did you see Dr Heiinessy in connection with deceased? No: I’ve never seen Dr Heiinessy. Did you supply deceased with money ? AVitness said lie was not responsible for the deceased’s condition and did not know she was pregnant. He neier had interomirso with her. A verdict was returned that the cans- of death was pyaemia, following septic abortion, criminally produced.
