An inquiry was Isold at Kumara on Friday by Mr H. J. Bigncll and Mr R. Mild, of tile Canterbury Education Board, concerning the recent burning of the school, hut evidence revealed that there was nothing to show how the fire started.

The death is announced of Daniel coal;ley, aged 66 years, who lias been an inmate of a. hospital for a few weeks. Deceased, who was born at Groymoutli, was well known in that district before coming to reside hero lately.

A willing band of workers were last evening busily engaged in decorating the Drill Hall for to-morrow night’s annual hall in aid of the local hospital. On Saturday next the opportunity will he given of seeing the West Coast representative team in action against Canterbury B team on Cass Suqare. The clash should prove an attractive one. The Coast team lias a strong, fast pack, and the hacks are also solid and fast, and should ho able to give a good account of themselves against the visiting team. It is expected there will he a large attendance present, to witness the, game, which promises to-be an attractive one.

A man named Donald Hoskyn was admitted to the Grey River Hospital yesterday afternoon, suffering from the effects of poisoning. It appears that Hoskyn visted Revington’s Hotel during the afternoon, and about 4 o’clock lie was suddenly taken ill. It being, apparent that the unfortunate man had swallowed something of a poisonous nature, lie was immediately conveyed to the hospital. His condition last night was not considered to he serious.

Edward Griffith, of Hohomi, pleaded guilty at the Magistrate’s Court, Greymouth yesterday to a charge of having an unregistered gun in his possession on August 21st, Sergeant Smyth stated that defendant received the gun about two years ago (from his brother. He intended leaving shortly for New South Wales, and about three weeks ago he took the gun to the police station to have it registered. It was then discovered that he had had it in possession' for two yo.ors. Defendant was convicted and ordered to pay ]2s costs:

The denili occurred yesterday at Cape Fouhvind, of Mr Harry Hall, aged 70. The late Sir Hall was one of the old identities of the West Coast. He was , born in the Holler, and resided in various parts iff the Coast practically during the whole of his.life. He was engaged principally in waggon driving, and in the early days was a well known ligure on the Huller (forge Hoad. He retired from work about five years ago, and resided permanently at Cape Foulwind. He is survived by his widow, one daughter, .Mrs J. Southward (Christchurch), and four sons: Messrs Con llall (Greyinouth), W. Hall (Karamen), Percy Hall (Wanganui) and Bert Hall (Hotorua). The death took place at Kokatahi yesterday afternoon of a sterling coloaist in the person of Mr William Fleming at the advanced age ol 9!i years. The deceased was a native of Bathgate, Glasgow, Scotland, and came to New Zealand in the Storm Cloud, arriving at Dunedin To years ago, lie was a miner, and went to Gabriel’s Gully and Shotover rushes, lie came to Hokitika in 18(55 and was a resident of Dnnoghues for many years. Of late he has been residing at Kokatahi and in spite of his advanced age was in comparatively good health until about a week ago. Deceased leaves one daughter (Mrs Annear, of Nelson), three sons (Air Alexander Fleming and Mr James Fleming, well-known settlers of Kokatahi, and -Mr William Fleming, of tin lainds and Survey Department, u l . Kanieri), -ID grandchildren, and Ilf' great grandchildren. The passing ol the deceased will he regretted bv mam friends, and general sympathy will he extended to the relatives.
