FIRE OUTBREAK
An alarm ol fire was given on Sunlay morning about 1.10 o’clock by the mall hells of North Revel I, Healey nd Sale Streets, followed some ten
minutes later by the big hell. The scene of the outbreak, was the residence and shop in Ppper Sewell Street, of Air C. C. Friend, insurance canvasser. The lire had a good hold when discovered and the combined premises were well gutted. The nearest adjoining premises, the residence of Mr Phihhs, were easily saved from any damage. It appears that Mrs Friend was in the house till 10.00 o’clock on Saturday night, when she left with Mr
Moviiiliiin (her hrofTier) for Kokntahi. She. locked up the place and left everything apparently safe. Mr Phihhs, next door neighbour returning home later, after the arrival of the late train, saw through a window facing his house a light burning, ap-
parently a kerosene lamp. He noticed this for some time before retiring, apparently the lamp having been left alight by Mrs Friend and if is supposed the lamp exploded or the wind overturned it. Mr Friend was absent in Westport.
