EUCHARISTIC CONGRESS
AIANY PASSENGERS BY THE MAKER A. WELLINGTON, Aug. 27. A majority of the through passengers by the Afakura which arrived from San Francisco are on their way to Sydney to attend the Eucharistic Congress. An outstanding personality is the Afost Rev. Edward J. Hanna, Archbishop of San Francisco. Born at Rochester, New York, in July, 1860, Archbishop Hanna is now in Ill’s 69th. year. He was appointed auxiliary Bishop of San Francisco in October, 1912, and Archbishop of that diocese in June, 1915. The Right Rev. Bishop Gerow, Bishop of Natchez, Mississippi, is also a passenger by the Makura.
Other mem bens of jtho clergy on hoard are: The Rev. Father AV. P. Brennan; the Rev. Father Dirks; the Rev. Father R. Kelly (Dublin, Ireland); the Rev. Father \V. Leen, of Dubuque. lowa, U.S.A. ; the Rev. Father Lyne, of San Francisco; the Rev. Father Alurphy, pastor of Auburn in Ireland, immortalised by Goldsmith as “Sweet Auburn, loveliest village of the plain”; the Rev. Father Manley, of Baltimore, U.S.A; the Rev. Father Maher, of San Francisco ; tile Rev. Father Aliilett, of San Francisco (secretary to Archbishop Hanna) ; the Rev. Father McGee, of Attleboro, Full River, Massachusetts; tile Rev. Father Ryan, of Port Augusta, South Australia; the Rev. Father Russell, of Cork, Ireland; the Rev. Father Samson, of Oakland, California; the Rev. Father Sullivan, of Sail Francisco Cathedral; the Rev. Father Waters, of Oregon; the Rev. Father Carroll, from Brooklyn, N.Y. ; the Rev. Father Casey, of New York; and the ’Rev. Father Pierron.
Other passengers travelling by the Alakura to attend the Eucharistic Congress are: Airs Bassett, a sister of Archbishop Hanna, and Alias Bassett; Afr and Mrs A. Dulfer, and Aliss O. Dulfer • Airs AL E. Kelly; Airs AY. AE Loot and ATiss A. E. T.eot; and Airs Scott and Aliss Scott. To meet the needs of the Catholic clergy and Initv travelling in the Alakura a chapel was specially fitted up on hoard by the Union Company. The children’s nursery was set- apart for the purpose and was completely furnished and decorated, thus enabling the passengers to carry out their religious duties and observances in privacy. Archbishop Hanna, Bishop Gerow, and the other clergy were met on arrival and welcomed by Arch hishoo O’Shea, whose guests they are during their brief stay in Wellington.
